ASU Newman Center Alumni
The Newman Center and Newman Club at ASU have a long pedigree stretching back to the earliest days of ASU’s existence. The Newman Club was first established in 1932 (when ASU was still the “Arizona State Teachers College”) to nourish the faith of the college’s first Catholic students. We are still going strong almost a century later, thanks in large part to the broad support of our alumni over multiple generations. Our alumni young and old have reminisced with us about their years at the Newman Center:
- Mass on the Grass
- Marriage in St. Mary’s chapel – in the days before it had air conditioning!
- Life-changing retreats in which they encountered God deeply for the first time
- Daily Mass at the Danforth Chapel
- The old café in the Newman Center
- Becoming Catholic here under the auspices of the Dominican Fathers
- The beloved “sunken living room” chapel
- Cheering Pope St. John Paul II as he passed by our front doors
Today as ever, our alumni are an integral part of our ongoing mission to ASU. Even as buildings and personnel inevitably change, what doesn’t change is that you are forever a part of our family and your life has been marked by your time here. We would love for you to visit – for Mass, for an event, or just to look around. Please find one of our priests and share your story!
Alumni Events

Homecoming
ASU’s homecoming is usually held in October. The Newman Center joins in the festivities welcoming our Newman alumni with open doors, scrumptious food and (most importantly) a bathroom break! Come hear the bell of the old brick chapel ring out as the homecoming parade makes its way right by our campus. Our clergy, staff and present students are all on hand and we would love to meet you!

Annual Pilgrimage
Each year the Newman Center invites alumni on a pilgrimage to grow together in faith and friendship. Most recently we took 25 pilgrims on a day trip to Tucson to explore the roots of our Catholic faith here in Arizona. We would love to see you on a future pilgrimage!
Alumni Happy Hours
We host periodic alumni happy hours near our campus – keep your eyes posted for dates. We especially invite you to the “Last Day of Class” happy hour in April, when we welcome our graduating students to the proud ranks of ASU Newman alumni!
